Still knee deep in the first hours, first days of writing a new song. The topic/conversation that seeded it, has been stalking me for a good two weeks, and I'm trying an opposite of norm method of writing my lyrics first. Writing poetry was my favorite thing in the world up until high school, and I'd like to get back to that play place. I'm thinking about reading some creation myths, as this one sure feels like wrangling a sea monster out of the ocean and carving it up to make beauty and order.
My two unexpected guides are the hip hop songs I've been listening to a whole lot, and the Jack London quote: "You can't wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club." Hopefully the tide will turn soon - be less club and more swirly baton. And it seems like if I keep coming back, it does.
"Put on your John Cage ears, Melanie!" says Sean Frenette. Not a bad idea...
